Residents of Nung Edong Ediene Community and the University of Uyo Community on Wednesday celebrated another milestone in grassroots development as the Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Dr Uwemedimo Udo, continued the handover of community-based projects. The projects included a 500KVA Power Substation for Nung Edong Ediene and a solar-powered mini water facility at the Faculty of Environmental Studies, University of Uyo.

‎Speaking during the handovers, Dr Udo said the projects were borne out of the administration's commitment to addressing the practical needs of the people and institutions within the local government. He explained that the Council intervened after learning that the Faculty of Environmental Studies had been without a reliable water supply for over two years due to the difficult terrain, noting that it took more than a month of intensive work to successfully provide the faculty with water.

‎Dr Udo commended the University's Vice Chancellor, Prof. Christopher Ekong, for repositioning the institution and reaffirmed his administration's resolve to continue delivering projects that leave lasting value.

‎Representing the Vice Chancellor, the President of the University of Uyo Alumni Association, Comrade Ekerete Adiaiduo, conveyed the VC's appreciation to the Chairman for the intervention, describing the project as a timely response to a longstanding challenge. He said the university community was delighted by the Council's support and thanked the Chairman for his commitment to humanity.

‎Also speaking, the Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Studies, Prof. Anthony Ujene, recalled that the faculty had been without water for the past two years, creating serious challenges for staff and students. He expressed profound gratitude to the Chairman for restoring access to water and assured that the facility would be properly maintained and put to maximum use.

‎Giving an overview of the electricity project at Nung Edong Ediene, the Council's Supervisor for Works, Obong Idara Akpan, explained that the power project was approved after the Chairman's team, while constructing a Compassionate Home in the community, was informed by the Village Head, Eteidung Okon William, that residents had been without public electricity for over seven years. He said the Chairman immediately approved the provision of the 500KVA power substation, which will also serve part of the neighbouring Ikot Oku Ikono Community.

‎The Paramount Ruler of Uyo Local Government Area, HRM Edidem Sylvanus Okon, JP, commended the Chairman for extending life-changing projects to communities across the local government and prayed for greater success and elevation in his service to the people.

Christiana Bassey; the Council Secretary, Mr Ubong Udofia; Councillors led by the Leader of Council, Hon. Ekemini Bassey; Supervisors; Management Staff of the Council led by the Head of Local Government Service, Elder Etiuwem Udo; Coordinator of the Arise Initiative for the Elderly, Mrs Mercy Eka; stakeholders from the communities; traditional rulers; men; women; and youths.
