The Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Dr Uwemedimo Udo, has officially flagged off the distribution of free Insecticide-Treated Nets (ITNs) to residents as part of a determined push to protect families and reduce malaria prevalence in the area, particularly children and pregnant women who are most vulnerable to the disease.
Speaking at the event held on Tuesday at the Primary Health Care Operational Base, Wellington Bassey Way, Uyo, the Chairman described the initiative as a direct investment in the health and well-being of the people.
Dr Udo expressed gratitude to His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, PhD, for his commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery in Akwa Ibom State and for supporting interventions that directly improve the well-being of the people.
According to the Director of Health Services, Mrs Victoria Mendie, a total of 318,750 insecticide-treated nets will be distributed to 129,012 households that were recently mobilised.
The free distribution of insecticide-treated nets, supported by partners including the United States Mission in Nigeria, the Against Malaria Foundation, BASF, and the Akwa Ibom State Government, targets households across Uyo LGA. Residents are urged to sleep inside the nets every night and collect their allocations at designated distribution points.
The event, attended by the Head of Local Government Service, Etiuwem Udo, supervisors, community leaders, health workers, and residents, ended with a call for full community participation to make Uyo a model in the fight against malaria.
